To put you at ease
While sporadically checking the PC Gamer thread, i noticed this quote had been added to the end of the original post.

We do completely understand that you want to keep your character names. After all, character names are a special part of your Guild Wars experience. So you'll be happy to know that yes, your character name will be reserved for you. If you link a Guild Wars 2 character to a Guild Wars character, the GW2 character will inherit the GW character’s accomplishments, as recorded in your Hall of Monuments. The Hall of Monuments, available through Guild Wars: Eye of the North, will provide access to unique companions, equipment, miniatures, titles, etc. that can’t be obtained any other way in GW2.
I like the whole idea of building a "family history" for my characters in The Hall of Monuments. With the timespan between Guild Wars: Eye of the North and Guild Wars 2, it's a cool idea to pass things--even names--down "through the family."
|
About a week ago when rumors of GW2 surfaced, i made a suggestion to solve the whining about character transfers through the two games. The suggestion was exactly what Gaile just posted. My suggestion was flamed, my thread was locked, and presumably, the people upstairs listened.
Whether this was already planned or they had taken into consideration a simple suggestion: take this situation as a reason to ease any uneasiness over how A-Net is going to handle the changes in the next game.
I myself do not like WoW, I have played G-Dub since the start and during the betas. They were either able to anticipate what a loyal G-Dub player was hoping for, or they took their suggestion to heart.
The changes from game to game have not been made lightly.
The people upstairs know what we want.
Stop panicking.

As happy as I was with GW:2... I wasn't one of those "end of the world - O Noes!" people...the only thing I would have liked was to be able to have my names reserved. The thought of someone walking around as another Hitomi Kyoko kinda made me a little sad... This is good news...thanks for posting.

well in gw1 i made the mistake of choosing random names (well just names i liked) for all my characters
if gw2 is as open as gw1 (i mean in most mmorpgs you play 1 or 2 characters, in gw1 i have 5 or more i regulary play with)
thus if gw2 is as open as gw1, i will make em 1 big family and think a bout a
good lastname for the family.
thus i was kind of planning to pick all new names.
though i am sure many will be very happy with this name reservation.

I'll just say this at the moment. What the magazine actually says the Hall of Monuments is and what everyone seems to assume it is, are two very different things.

I dunno who you were referring to. Personally I was just responding to the quote in the OP. I'm sure a lot of people will jump to the conclusion that by "provide access to unique equipment" this will mean weapons...when it doesn't say weapons, it says equipment. I think the only way weapons could be taken over is if they were customised. Otherwise in D1 of the starter town we would have wammos (or, Chammos - a wammo...but a Charr) trying to sell Crystalline Swords for 100 <insert currency here> + 300 <insert ecto-replacement here>.
Personally I am keeping very open mind and, to be safe, taking most things that have been announced very lightly. We all know that from time to time they don't do what they claim they will...and circumstances may change...which leads me to believe that some of this information may be out of date in a year or so's time anyway.

I was thinking last night they could do something like this:
Basically you beat GWEN then you get taken to a tomb with X ammount of your items (No gold as this would unbalance GW2). You then get buried with these items.
You get to X point in GW2, take a quest called "Tomb of the Ancestor" you speak to your GW1 character, pass and test and they say "Blah blah you are of my blood line I grant these magical items to you"
Then they could reward you with the items you buried them with, Anet would need to "police" this though to stop abuse, maybe a limit per account, or the character has to Ascend in Prop / Factions / NF first then beat GWEN.
But all in all this news made me happy.

I just mean most people in general through-out all the GW2 threads. Most people seem to think the Hall of Monuments will be a means to transfer your current weapons/armors/items to the new game. That's not what the magazine describes at all.

We aren't making these assumptions on the magazine information alone, but on the direct information Gaile Gray has given us, read the quote on my first post. Then read it again. That is why we are making hypothesis's about equipment transfer Knightsaber.

Aawwwww do you want a cookie? Here you go a cookie for you.
You deserve a cookie for being the only person with this suggestion and being the single person Anet made their decision on, congrats, your name should be engraved in the Hall of Heroes.

It's 3:00 am and I'm out of gas. A cookie would be nice.
I was never implying that my opinions alone are what A-Net makes their opinions on. I was simply pointing out a correlation between my idea and their announced feature. I was using this correlation to show that A-Net's decisions do reflect how some players feel regardless of whether they read my particular post or not.
Kind of like that PBS "viewers like you" crap.

Fine I'll just go out on a limb and make my speech again. I already made it in the other huge threads but everyone always ignores it in favor of the long-winded pointless rant posts.
What the magazine actually says is titles and minis from GW1 will be on display in the Hall of monuments. It goes on to say that "special weapons" you have earned will be on display, which you can take out and use.
The "special weapon" and "earned" definitely make it sound like you can't just carry over some item from your inventory.
Earlier in the article, it describes how you actively build your Hall of Monuments in Eye of the North by completing quests. I think the way you earn these special weapons is by completing quests to unlock them. That said, nowhere does it mention transferring any any personal items from your inventory to the next game. The way Gaile says it "provides access to unique armor" and not- it lets you transfer armor and weapons would seem to go along with the unlocked through quests theory.
And as seen above, Gaile has stated that if you link your GW2 account to your GW1 account and name a character the same as from GW1 it will automatically inherit all its titles.

Would be really nice if we could have the option in GW:EN to carry over our character names AND have the option to change our current characters' names prior to carrying them over.
That would be enough for me to buy GW:EN and get back into GW1 before GW2 comes out.

Maybe I'm missing something from another thread, but did Anet actually say that GWEN was the last expansion/addon that they're doing for GW1?

No, the article actually said that there will be more new content for GW during the wait for GW2.
Quote from LiQuId StEeL summary: "A team will be assigned to support the current games with live content still expected."
And Gaile said that the GW servers will remain on line after release of GW2.

Ty for the quick response. I tried asking this question in the other GW2 thread, but I think it got lost in the mess that it's become. TY again Darcy!

@OP - I didn't take your comments as taking credit. You were obviously including all related requests as a reason for the ArenaNet statements.
ANet has been obvious in their attention to fan site forums in the past and I am sure that will continue.
And so far the GW2 description looks like the devs were working on a new standalone chapter that would incorporate a lot of things fans have requested and discovered they were developing a whole new game.
